There are two scholarship application paths:

  1. First-time Applicants (persons who have not yet applied for a Buerkel-Zoellner Foundation scholarship)
  2. Renewal Applicants (persons who have applied for a Buerkel-Zoellner Foundation scholarship previously, regardless of whether or not a scholarship was awarded)

Rules and eligibility details are below.  Some details are common for both paths;  where there are differences, they are presented in two-column format, labeled for each path.

Eligibility Requirements

Note:  Any one individual may only apply for a Buerkel-Zoellner scholarship twice, regardless of the outcome of each respective application.

First-time Applicants

— Educational scholarships will be made available to students who are pursuing higher education through an accredited college, university, or trade school as a full-time student or the equivalent thereof throughout the scholarship period.

— Applicants must be or have graduated from Powder Valley Charter School, North Powder, Union County, Oregon in the year 2015 or thereafter.

— Applicants may submit requests for a scholarship two separate times. Recipients must be enrolled and maintain 12 credit hours or as a full-time student or the equivalent thereof throughout the scholarship period to retain their scholarship.  If a student chooses to withdraw at any time for any reason whatsoever, his/her scholarship will be refunded to the Foundation.

— Applications will not be considered unless they are complete and received on or before the deadline as established by the ​Board of Directors of the Foundation.

Renewal Applicants

— Renewal applicants must have maintained a GPA of 2.0 or above for the last year of school attended in an accredited college, university, trade school.

— Recipients must be enrolled and maintain 12 credit hours or as a full time student or the equivalent thereof throughout the scholarship year to retain their scholarship.  If a student chooses to withdraw at any time for any reason whatsoever, his/her scholarship will be refunded to the Foundation.

Criteria for Awards

— The Board of Directors of the Foundation, at their discretion, will grant scholarships in amounts determined by the Board, based upon the following criteria:   the applicant's grade point average, his or her involvement in school/community activities, aspirations and goals as well as recommendations from third parties and other funds available to the applicant.

Grounds for Disqualification

— Applications will not be considered if they do not include all information and documentation referred to in the applications.
— Late applications will not be considered.

Submission Deadline

— All scholarship applications must be submitted on or before May 1.

Award Determination

— Scholarships will be announced after the North Powder graduation ceremony.

Funds Distribution

— Distributions of granted scholarship funds will be made the last week in August.  If you need the funds distributed at an earlier date, You will need to contact the Foundation in advance.  Recipients must return the College of Choice form prior to August 1 to confirm the selection of your school.

When submitting your applications and requested letters of recommendation, please focus on the efforts you have expended to achieve your accomplishments and what makes you outstanding and unique. Tell us why you are applying to the college you are hoping to attend and why you are pursuing the major you have selected.​

College of Choice Form

Every applicant to whom a scholarship is awarded must fill out and submit the "College of Choice" form linked below before July 31 of the year in which the scholarship is awarded.  you must submit a College of Choice form that is available on this website on or before July 31.   If your College of Choice form is not received on or before July 31, your scholarship will be forfeited.
