About the Foundation

Founded on a Love for Community

Donald Buerkel established the Foundation based on his belief that education, with an emphasis on liberal arts, including religion, history, writing and other creative studies, was important. It was also his desire to support and further education and community enhancement through scholarships and community grants to eligible 501(c)(3) organizations.

Donald Buerkel was born and raised in Michigan. He was a teacher in California for a number of years before coming to Oregon. He purchased acreage in North Powder (Union County) and, while operating a ranch, established environmental safeguards for the feeding and habitat of birds and game by planting trees, establishing riparian cover and other endeavors. He was a renowned potter in the area and his love for art and pottery led to his support of many groups such as Crossroads Art Center in Baker City, Oregon. Mr. Buerkel died in 2014 at the age of 72.
